Flowing Utopia

An experimental film about a dancer escaping from the world into a magical place: flowing ink water in a glowing forest, unstable, mysterious, a very strange space, a futuristic natural environment, against gravity, weightless.

The film also implies the fundamental uncertainty and ambiguity of life during troubled times when the environment in which humans live is chaotic and upended.

International contemporary artists Sixue Yang, Federica De Francesco and Danquis
Johnson collaborate on an experimental film during the pandemic to offer relief and escape.

Flowing Utopia depicts Federica De Francesco dance performance along with Sixue Yang’s ink painting to Danquis Johnson’s Ep “Utopian Rose”.

The project was created in 2022 and has so far received the following awards and achieved the following results:

  • Art Film Awards – January 2023 edition: Honorable Mention Experimental Film
  • Parallel Wuhan – May/June 2023: Tanhualin New Media Art Invitation Exhibition (China)
  • Stuzzicarti Festival – June 2023: Experimental Contemporary Art Festival (Italy)
  • FILE Festival – August 2023: Electronic Language International Festival (Brasil)
  • Arriving in Softness – Dec 2025/Jan 2026: Hezhizhou Art Museum Exhibition (China)

Sixue Yang, Federica De Francesco and Danquis Johnson are an artist collective. They met in 2022 during an online artist residency organised by Belgrade Art Studio; since then, they have decided to collaborate and combine their artistic skills, blending dance, music and painting.

They are represented at K-Visualo 2026 by Frederica De Francesco, dancer, choreographer and dance teacher.

‘Since 2005, I have worked as a dancer and performer on numerous projects, with companies and as a soloist, working both independently and as winner of artist residencies.

‘I love to experiment and combine different art forms, collaborating with actors, musicians, painters, photographers and emerging fashion designers.

‘I prefer to explore concrete themes: observation of society, local research, engagement with and connection to the environment and landscape, scientific research.’
